Diving at the Marquesas Keys
Diving at the Marquesas Keys
The Marquesas Keys have warm waters and, because it is incidentally an atoll (the only known atoll in the Atlantic Ocean), it is also known as one of the great dive sites of the area. For those of you who don't know, an atoll is essentially a coral island going in a circle, or a coral island circling a lagoon. And you know what that means. That's right! Diving at the Marquesas Keys gives you a chance to get up close and personal with some of the most interesting and colorful marine life you can hope to see in a lifetime! Add to this the marine life attracted not only by the corals and mangroves, but also the wrecks – yes, there are wrecks in the area – and you can have the transcendental experience of swimming with many fish of different types. The wrecks are something to behold as well, and many divers are attracted to the Marquesas Keys because of this.
Diving at the Marquesas Keys are best done at the southern side of the island – that's where the largest coral clusters are, about eight to twelve feet underwater. Go deeper, and that's where you find the wrecks and the patch reefs. As with fishing in the Marquesas Keys, diving at the Marquesas Keys are thought of by many as best when taken as an overnight affair. There are great anchor sites at the Marquesas Keys – there's very little trouble of not being able to settle there for a long haul.
